Is It Cheaper to Repair or Replace a Damaged Door?
And Where the Line Actually Falls

A Farm Cove client rang to ask about repairing a bathroom door. On site the answer changed: the bottom of it was broken up past the point where filling would look right. A new door went on instead — three hours, $320.

People almost always ask for the repair. It sounds like the smaller, cheaper, less disruptive option, and often it is. The useful thing is knowing which side of the line a particular door falls on before anyone starts filling it.

The line is roughly this: if the damage is a dent, a chip or a scuff, the door's shape is still there and filler only has to fill. If the damage has taken the shape away — a broken corner, a bottom rail chewed open — then filler has to rebuild the shape first. That is a different job, it takes far longer, and the result is a surface that looks flat until the light comes along it sideways.

The door as we found it. The bottom edge has broken open rather than just worn — there is no original shape left to fill against.

Why the Bottom of a Door Goes First

It is the part that gets everything: water on a bathroom floor, the vacuum cleaner, a foot pushing the door open because both hands are full. And most interior doors are hollow — a light frame with thin skins over it — so the bottom rail is a modest piece of timber doing all the work down there. Once it splits, the skins have nothing to hold onto and the damage opens up quickly.

That is also why a patch on a hollow door rarely lasts. Filler bonded to a broken edge and thin ply has very little to grip, and the same foot that broke it is still opening the door the same way.

Do the Sum Before Deciding

A proper repair on damage like this is not one step. It is rebuilding the missing section, filling, sanding, priming, and then painting the whole face of the door so the repair does not sit as a patch of slightly different sheen. Add it up and you are usually within sight of the cost of a new door.

Meanwhile a replacement leaves nothing to look at. On this job the frame was square and sound, so the existing frame and architrave stayed exactly where they were — the new door was hung on them and finished. That is the part people do not expect: most of what makes a doorway look like a doorway is not the door.

When a Repair Is Genuinely the Right Call

Plenty of the time it is. A solid timber door is worth repairing almost regardless — there is real material to work with and often nothing modern that matches it. Same for a door that sticks or drags: that is usually hinges, a swollen edge or a frame that has moved, and it is an adjustment rather than a replacement. And a dent in an otherwise sound door fills and paints out perfectly well.

The one worth matching carefully is the door itself. A new door that is the wrong style or the wrong white reads fine up close and wrong from the end of the hallway, which is where everyone actually sees it.

What It Cost

Three hours, $320 — the new door, the hardware, hanging it on the existing frame and finishing it. The old one went away with us.

If you are not sure which side of the line your door is on, a photo of the damaged part usually settles it without anyone coming out.
