From a Damaged Door to a Clean New Fit

Puttying and repainting a damaged section rarely looks great once finished — and can end up costing close to the same as replacing the door outright.

The bottom of the old door. Once timber is broken up like this, filling and repainting it rarely looks right afterwards — and costs close to what a new door costs.
After

The new door hung on the existing frame, with an even gap over the tiles so it swings clear of the floor.

About This Door Replacement

A client called asking if we could repair the door to their bathroom. On inspecting it on-site, the bottom of the door had been damaged enough that a simple patch-up wasn't really the right call.

Puttying and repainting a section like that rarely looks great once finished, and can end up costing close to the same as replacing the door outright. So instead of patching it, we fitted a new door — a cleaner result for a similar price.

⚠️

The Problem

The bottom of the bathroom door had been damaged enough that a simple patch-up wouldn't have held up or looked right once repainted.

🔨

The Solution

Rather than puttying and repainting a damaged section, a new door was measured, cut to fit and installed — for a similar price to a proper patch repair.

The Finished Result

The bathroom now has a clean, undamaged door that fits properly — a straightforward fix that avoided a repair that wouldn't have lasted or looked right.

Door Replacement FAQ

Is it cheaper to repair a damaged door or replace it?

It depends how far the damage goes. A dent or a small chip fills and paints out fine. Once the bottom of the door is broken up, filling it means building the shape back before you even start painting — and by the time that is done you are close to the cost of a new door, with a repair that still shows in the right light.

Does the whole frame have to be replaced too?

Usually not. If the frame is square and sound, the new door is hung on it and the existing architrave stays where it is. That is most of why replacing a door is a small job rather than a big one.

Why do bathroom doors get damaged at the bottom?

Because that is where the water and the wear are. A bathroom floor gets wet, doors get kicked open and shut with a foot, and the bottom edge is usually the least protected part of the door. A hollow-core door with a damaged bottom rail has very little holding it together down there.

Will the new door match the others in the house?

That is the thing worth getting right before ordering. A door is chosen to match the style and the finish of the ones already in the hallway — otherwise the repair is invisible up close and obvious from down the hall.
