The screw had worked its way out and the knocker was hanging off one corner, sitting crooked and lifted away from the door. One more good knock and it would have been on the doorstep. It came off, the fixings went back in properly, and it sits square and solid again. Old, small, nothing structural — but it is the first thing every visitor to that house puts their hand on. A fair bit of what we do looks like this: the jobs that are too small to ring a tradesman about. If it is on your list and you are in East Auckland, ask anyway — we are usually glad to help.

Lock barrel replaced · Botany · Oct 2026 · 2 hours · $140

The key for this slider was gone and there was no spare, so the door could not be locked. Rather than put a whole new lock on the door, the lock came off and went back to the people who make them, and a new barrel was made to fit the one that was already there. It went back on the same visit, with two new keys, and the door locks and slides as it should.

Hole in the wall repaired · Mellons Bay · Oct 2026 · $160

A small hole in the plasterboard, right beside a door. It is ringed in red on the first photo because otherwise you would scroll straight past it — and that is the whole problem with holes like this. Too small to ring a tradesman about, too obvious once you have seen it, and it stays on the list for months. Filled, sanded back flat and painted, so the wall reads as one surface again. A small storeroom with the lock it came with — a plain keyed lever, the same one that is on every internal door in the house. Fine for a cupboard. Not fine once a safe is going in behind it, which is what the owner was planning. A keyed lock has no idea who opened it or when, and a key that goes missing is a lock that has to be changed. A smart lock answers both: entry by code rather than key, codes that can be handed out and taken back one at a time, and a record of every time the door was opened. Same door, same frame, no cutting about — the new lock went onto the existing prep in a couple of hours.

Executive desk assembled · Parnell · Jun 2026 · about 2.5 hours · $140

An executive desk in two flat-pack boxes, the kind with six drawers, a back panel and an instruction sheet that runs to forty steps. Out of the boxes at 6pm, standing against the wall and squared up by 8:45. Flat-pack is the job people most often start themselves and most often ring about halfway through — a drawer that will not sit square, a panel in back to front, the cam locks that only go in one way. We assemble desks, beds, wardrobes, bookcases and office furniture across Auckland, clear the cardboard away, and the thing is level and solid before we leave. Called in the afternoon, on the wall the same evening. Rinat was there within the hour and the television was up, levelled and switched on inside an hour of starting. A TV on the wall is mostly about what is behind the plasterboard: the bracket has to land on the framing, not on the lining, or the whole thing is hanging on four plugs and a hope. Studs found, bracket fixed, TV lifted on, screen levelled and the cable run down to the socket. One hour, $120, no second visit.

Desk assembled · Flat Bush · Jun 2026 · 1.5 hours · $120

A six-drawer desk out of the carton and onto its legs, same day as the call. The photographs run from 9:58 to 11:38, which is about what one of these takes when the drawers have runners and the frame is bolted rather than cammed. Flat-pack looks like a job for a wet Sunday until the second drawer will not line up and the first one has already been screwed in the wrong way round. Rinat did this one himself, on site the same day.
