How This Started
Handyman Botany didn't start as a business plan. It started at home.
I kept finding myself fixing, rebuilding and reorganising my own place — better storage, smarter layouts, security and smart-tech installs, things that made day-to-day life actually work instead of nearly work. Then we had a child, and the whole thing sharpened. Suddenly I wasn't just thinking about whether a shelf looked good — I was thinking about whether it would hold, whether the gate latched properly, whether the balustrade was genuinely safe.
That's the lens I still work through. When I quote a job in your home, I'm thinking about how it holds up in five years with kids running past it — not just how it looks on the day I finish.
Before Handyman Botany
I've been in New Zealand construction since 2013. Not as someone who picked up a drill on the weekend — on real sites, with real deadlines and real inspections.
My first company, based in West Auckland. New-build residential work from the foundation up — framing, subfloors, structure. The parts of a house nobody sees once it's finished, and the parts that matter most if they're done wrong.
Started my BCITO Carpentry apprenticeship — the recognised New Zealand qualification. Years of on-site training, assessed work and theory. This is the point where it stopped being a job and became the trade I actually wanted.
Five residential new-builds in Auckland taken from foundation to finished house, plus one large project outside the city. If your job turns out to be structural, this is the background I bring to it.
A full house renovation on a historic property in Remuera. Older homes don't forgive shortcuts — you work around what's already there, match what exists, and get it right the first time because there's no second attempt on a heritage building.
Around six commercial renovation projects — aluminium door and window replacement, repairs and painting. Commercial sites are where you learn to work to a programme and leave a place tidy every single day.
Bought the van, and started working for the neighbours. Based in Golflands, East Auckland.

Most handyman jobs don't need a builder. But when yours turns out to be structural — rot behind the cladding, a beam that's gone, a wall that shouldn't come out — you want someone who can tell the difference before the work starts, not after.

This isn't a call centre that dispatches a stranger. It's a small team, and you'll recognise the same faces.
Ravil — apprentice, and my son
Ravil has started working alongside me, learning the trade the same way I did — on real jobs, doing real work, not watching from the side. Teaching him properly means doing everything properly, which keeps me honest on every site we're on.
Nick — for the bigger jobs
Nick runs his own handyman business on the North Shore. When a project here is too big for us on our own, I ask him to come across. We've worked together long enough that I know exactly what standard I'm getting — which is the only reason I'd put someone else on your property.
Summit Scaffolding — proper access, properly set up
I own my own scaffold and use it for smaller work. But for serious projects there's no substitute for a professional setup, so we partner with Summit Scaffolding — soffit, gutter, roofline and high exterior work gets a proper engineered scaffold before anyone climbs anything. Cutting corners on access is how people get hurt and how jobs get done badly.

What It Costs
Straight answers on pricing
There's a minimum charge covering travel and setup — we'll tell you what it is before anything is booked, not after. For bigger work you get a written fixed quote up front, and the invoice matches it. If the price feels high, say so — we'll look at different materials or a different approach rather than quietly cutting corners.

We're based in Golflands — around the corner from most of East Auckland. No travel charge for local suburbs, because we're genuinely local. Our kids go to school here. Most of our work comes from neighbours telling neighbours, which is exactly the kind of pressure that keeps standards high.
