New Timber Deck Build — Cockle Bay

From an Empty Outdoor Area to a Finished Timber Deck
This project started with no deck in place at all. The first stage was setting out and building the timber framing that would support the new decking surface.
During installation, spacers were used to maintain consistent gaps between the decking boards. Screw positions were carefully aligned so the fixings followed clean, straight lines across the finished surface.
Where fixings were positioned close to the ends of the boards, holes were pre-drilled where required to help reduce the risk of the timber splitting.
Once the main deck surface was complete, the exposed sides were boxed in to conceal the framing and give the new deck a clean, finished appearance from all visible sides.
The Before & After photo shows the transformation: an outdoor area with no decking became a new timber deck with carefully spaced boards, neat fixing lines and finished edge boxing.

Can you build a completely new timber deck?
Yes. Where suitable for the property and scope, Handyman Botany can undertake timber framing, decking installation and finishing details.
Can you replace only damaged deck boards?
Yes, provided the supporting structure beneath them remains suitable. The existing deck should be assessed before deciding how much needs replacement.
Why are gaps needed between decking boards?
Consistent spacing helps provide a neat appearance and allows water to move between the boards rather than collecting on the surface.
Why do you pre-drill some screw holes?
Pre-drilling can be useful close to the end of a timber board where driving a fixing directly into the timber may increase the chance of splitting.
Can the screw lines be kept straight?
Yes. Careful set-out helps keep fixing positions consistent so the screws form clean visual lines across the completed deck.
Do you finish the sides of a deck?
Yes. Where suitable, boxing or fascia can be installed around exposed sides to conceal framing and give the deck a more finished appearance.
Can an old grey deck be restored instead of replaced?
Sometimes. The important question is whether the timber and supporting structure remain sound. Weathered appearance alone does not necessarily mean the deck requires replacement.
