Why Won't My Double-Glazed Window Close Properly?
It Is Usually the Hinges, Not the Window
A door shut on a room in Mellons Bay and would not open again. The way out was the small sash above the window — and getting through it broke the hardware that holds it to the frame. Three hours, $350.
When a double-glazed window stops closing, most people look at the glass or the frame. Nine times out of ten neither is the problem. The sash is carried by a pair of friction stays — the flat scissor arms you see when the window is open — and they are what decides whether it drops back into the frame square or sits proud on one side.
Bend one and the geometry is gone. The sash still swings, it just no longer lands where the seal is.

How It Happened
The door to the room shut and would not open. The only other way out was the small top sash, which is not built to be climbed through — it is built to let air in. Opening it far enough to get out took it past where the stays are meant to travel, and that was the end of them.
Nobody was hurt and nothing was broken that could not be replaced. But the window was left open to the weather and could not be locked, which on a ground floor matters the same evening, not next week.

Why Not Just Buy Stays?
Because friction stays are not one size. Length, stack height, the position of the fixing holes and the hand of the arm all belong to the joinery system the window was made in. Fit a near-enough pair and the sash sits proud of the seal — you have moved the gap, not closed it.
So the sash came off the window and went to the company that manufactures this joinery, where the matching hardware was found against the real part rather than a photo of it.

Back On the Window
New stays on, sash back in, adjusted until it pulls down evenly onto the seal the whole way along. It shuts flush and locks again.

When It Is Worth Repairing Rather Than Replacing
If the frame is sound and the glass is intact, hardware is the cheap end of the problem. A new double-glazed unit for a sash this size runs into four figures once it is made and fitted. Hardware and the labour to match it is a fraction of that, and the window goes back to behaving the way it did when it was new.
Worth checking before you ring anyone: does the sash swing freely and simply land wrong, or does the frame itself move when you push it? The first is hardware. The second is a bigger conversation.
Three hours, $350 — hardware matched, fitted and adjusted, with twelve months on the work.
