Deck Replacement
From a Tired Old Deck to a Full Rebuild
An old timber deck in Pukekohe had reached the end of its life. Rather than patch it up again, it was stripped out and rebuilt from the framing up — new decking, new steps and a new balustrade, completed alongside the LBP-qualified carpenter on the team.
The existing deck had been there a long time. Weathered boards, a painted balustrade that had seen better days, and the kind of general tiredness that no amount of sanding and repainting really fixes. At a certain point, patching a deck like this stops being the cheaper option — you spend real money and still end up with an old deck.
So the decision was to take it right back and rebuild. The old structure came out, new bearers and joists went in, and the layout was opened up to make better use of the space than the original deck did — a wider, more usable platform rather than a like-for-like copy of what was there.
The work was done alongside the LBP-qualified carpenter who now works with Handyman Botany. Deck framing, a new set of steps and a balustrade are structural work, and having an LBP carpenter on the job means that side of it is done and signed off properly.
The finishing details are what make a rebuilt deck look deliberate rather than repaired: a timber balustrade with black aluminium balusters so the view isn't closed in, a proper set of steps with landings built on site, and slatted skirting along the base — including a hinged access hatch, so the space underneath stays reachable instead of being sealed off.

The original deck — weathered boards and a tired painted balustrade.

Old deck out, new bearers and joists in — the rebuild starts at the structure.

New boards going down over the rebuilt frame.

Steps and balustrade framed up on site rather than bought in.

The finished deck — wider than the original, with an open balustrade.

From the yard — steps, slatted skirting and a hinged access hatch underneath.
The Brief, Build & Result
The Brief
An old timber deck past the point where repainting and board swaps were worth the money — the owners wanted it done properly rather than patched again.
The Build
Full strip-out and rebuild — new bearers, joists and decking, a wider layout, new steps with landings, and a balustrade with black aluminium balusters, built with an LBP carpenter on the job.
The Result
A bigger, solid deck that opens the view rather than boxing it in, with slatted skirting and an access hatch keeping the space underneath usable.
