New Deck Build
From Bare Ground to Finished Covered Deck
A brand new timber deck built from the ground up in Tuakau — framed, decked and finished with a covered pergola roof, completed alongside the LBP-qualified carpenter on the team.
This one started with nothing more than a plain patch of ground outside the back door — no decking, no framing, no shelter. The brief was a proper deck the homeowners could actually use in all weather, so the build included a full covered pergola roof over the top, not just a bare deck exposed to the sun and rain.
This project also marks a bit of a milestone for Handyman Botany. It was built alongside an LBP-qualified carpenter on the Handyman Botany team — someone I have worked with for around six years, going back to when we were building houses together at a previous company, where he mentored me through my Carpentry Level 4 qualification. With an LBP on the team, we can take on properly signed-off decking of any complexity, right through to bigger builds.
With the framing and decking built first, the team moved on to the pergola roof structure, then finished with built-in bench seating along the rails and a proper set of steps down to the lawn — turning a bare section of ground into a complete, usable outdoor space.

Starting point — no decking or framing in place yet.

Framing and decking boards going in.

Fitting the roof framing.

The finished deck — covered roof, built-in bench seating and steps down to the lawn.
The Brief, Build & Result
The Brief
A plain patch of ground with no decking, no shelter and nowhere to sit outside — the homeowners wanted a proper, usable outdoor space they could rely on in any weather.
The Build
A full new deck was framed and built from scratch, topped with a covered pergola roof, built-in bench seating and finished steps — completed alongside an LBP carpenter on the team.
The Result
A bare section of ground is now a complete covered deck — framed, decked, roofed and fitted with bench seating and steps, ready to use whatever the weather's doing.
