Before & After

Turning an Open Side Access Into a Safer Garden Area

There had previously been no need for a gate in this opening. Once the family's needs changed, closing the side access became an important safety improvement.

Open Side Access

The opening had no gate, allowing unrestricted access between this section of the garden and the rest of the property.

Custom Gate Installed

A purpose-built timber gate now closes the opening while matching the existing style elsewhere on the property.

The Customer's Request

โ€œCan You Make One Like the Gate We Already Have?โ€

There had never previously been a need for a garden gate in this part of the property. As the family's circumstances changed and children became part of everyday life, the owners wanted to make the outdoor area safer and more securely enclosed.

A timber garden gate was already installed on the opposite side of the property. Rather than fitting a generic ready-made gate that would look unrelated to the rest of the house, the customer asked whether a new gate could be made in a similar style.

The solution was to build a new timber gate specifically for this opening, using the existing gate as the visual reference for the proportions and overall appearance.

Family Safety

The gate was added to help create a safer enclosed outdoor area for the family.

๐Ÿ“

Custom Sized

The gate was built specifically for the existing opening rather than adapted from a standard pre-made size.

Matching Existing Style

The design was based on the timber gate already present on the other side of the property.

A Little Extra Help

My Young Apprentice for the Day

For this project I brought along my son, Ravil, to help with some of the work and, more importantly, to learn practical skills that will be useful throughout his life.

Measuring, cutting timber, understanding how a frame goes together and seeing a project progress from an empty opening to a finished gate are all simple skills that are best learned by doing.

A small Shelly Park project, but a good opportunity to pass practical building skills on to the next generation.
Build Process

Building the Gate From Timber to Finished Installation

The gate was measured, cut and assembled for the opening, then fitted with hinges, palings and the final latch hardware.

The Result

A Gate That Looks Like It Belongs There

Once the gate was hanging correctly, the palings were completed and trimmed to height. A hand opening was then cut into the gate and the latch installed so it could be opened, closed and secured easily.

The result is a practical new boundary that helps make the garden safer while also fitting naturally with the timber style already used elsewhere on the property.

Instead of looking like a later addition, the new gate was built to complement the existing property.
